Structural Engineering

Job Description

Structural Engineering jobs are involved in the structural engineering design and construction of various structures, including large buildings, bridges and tunnels. Structural engineers work alongside architects, and are responsible for assessing how buildings should be constructed to stand up to the stresses and strains placed upon them. Structural engineering technology and software is advancing the field continuously. The civil and structural engineering fields often overlap.

The structural engineering job duties include:

  • The preparation of drawings and building specifications
  • The investigation of ground conditions and the analysis of results of site tests
  • The calculation of loads and stresses placed upon structures
  • Model testing on the computer to ensure that the structure can withstand forces such as wind, gravity and earth tremors
  • Site visits, checking the construction is in accordance with the design

Working Conditions

Work is office based, however site visits can take place outside in all weather conditions, with travelling from site to site being common.

Qualities that a structural engineer should have include:

  • accuracy and attention to detail
  • wide knowledge of construction practices
  • analytical and problem-solving skills
  • interest in mathematics and physics

Employers of structural engineers include independent structural engineering contractors, structural engineering consultancies, the structural engineering firm, rail operators, local and central government, industrial organisations and research establishments.

Entrance Requirements

Most entrants have a structural engineering degree from accredited/recognized structural engineering schools or universities offering structural engineering science.

Training or internships for newly qualified structural engineers usually involves working alongside other members of staff in order to gain experience of the different aspects of the structural engineering career. Employers may offer structured training schemes leading to chartered engineer status. Self-employment in the industry is common, but securing new contracts can be difficult. The potential to work overseas is available.
